INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON AL-IMAM AL-SHÂFI'Î

Abu Abdillah Mohammed b İdris Al-Shafi’i is the founder of the denomination of Shafi’i whose followers are seen in various parts of the Muslim world and especially in a large number in the east and the southeast of Turkey. Imam Al-Shafi’i , who lived between 150-204/767-820, is one of the most distinguished scholars in the history of Islamic thought. He was not only a founder of an Islamic jurisprudence denomination but also someone who had deep impact on Islamic disciplines ,chiefly, fıqh (Islamic jurisprudence), usul al-fıqh (the methodology of fıqh),  hadith (tradition), and tafsir ( the interpretation of the holy Quran). It is obvious that by virtue of having been the founder of a denomination with a great number of followers, he has had a significant role in the formation of traditions and customs in Islamic communities.

The understanding of Imam Al-Shafi’i, who is one of the architects of Islamic thought and has had a considerable contribution to its formation, is of crucial importance regarding the accurate perception of Islamic thought. By the same token, we believe that commemorating al-Imam al-Shafi’i through a symposium is to make substantial contribution to the accurate assessment of the past and the present of our region. To this end, we have decided to arrange an international symposium in order to discuss al-Imam Al- Shafi’i and Shafi’i denomination, scientifically. This symposium, which is to be the first held in our country, is to be carried out by the collaboration of the Association of Oriental Studies, the General Secretary of Special Provincial Administration in  Diyarbakır and Diyarbakır Greater Municipality.

The possible topics to be discussed in the symposium are as follows;

1.      The period when al-Shafi’i lived

A. political situation

      B. scientific and cultural structure

2.      His life and works

3.      The role and influence of al-Shafi’i in fıqh

4.      The role and influence of al-Shafi’i in usul al- fıqh

5.      The role and influence of al-Shafi’i in the discipline of hadith

6.      His influence on tafsir

7.      His influence on discipline such as kalam and tasawwuf( Islamic theology and mysticism )

8.      His poetry and literary character

9.      The process of the formation of al-Safi’i denomination

10.  The regions where this denomination is prevalent

11.  The contemporary studies and researches on al-Shafi’i
